Debunking the Top 5 Myths About Tutoring

I have been tutoring high school students for quite a while, since 2010. Over those years I have learned a thing or two about the different approaches and myths parents and students have in regards to tutoring and all types of academic support.
Tutoring has come a long way since the days of extra worksheets at the kitchen table. But despite its growth, a lot of people still believe outdated or flat-out wrong things about what tutoring is and who it’s for.
Whether you’re a parent wondering if it’s “too early” to get help, or a student picturing awkward sessions with a strict, clipboard-carrying adult—this post is for you. Let’s bust some myths.
Myth #1: “Tutoring is only for students who are failing.”
Reality: Actually, many of our students are doing absolutely fine in school. They come to us because they want to do better—maybe to get into a competitive university program, move their grade from the 80s to the 90s, or feel more confident heading into final and diploma exams.
High-performing students don’t just “wing it”—they train smarter. Tutoring helps turn good grades into great ones and stress into strategy.
Myth #2: “A good teacher means you don’t need a tutor.”
Reality: Great teachers are awesome, and we are so grateful for them—but they’re working with 25 to 35 or even 40 students at once. Even the best classroom experience can’t always give each student the personalized support they might need.
Tutoring fills that gap. At Ace It, we work one-on-one, which means we can slow down, speed up, and focus exactly where the student needs it most. We’re not here to replace teachers—we’re here to back them up.
Myth #3: “Tutoring is boring and full of drills.”
Reality: Honestly? If it’s boring, you’re doing it wrong. Good tutoring isn’t about endless worksheets—it’s about engaging explanations, real conversation, and actual lightbulb moments. Speaking of lightbulb moments, part of the fun and beauty of explaining complex scientific and mathematical concepts is that we get to see them happening often right in front of our eyes .
Most of our tutors are university students—smart, relatable, and super down-to-earth. They know how to break down tough topics and keep it real. Many of our students say their sessions are actually… fun. (We know, weird right?)
Myth #4: “You can just watch YouTube videos instead.”
Reality: YouTube can be a great supplement, but it’s not a substitute for a real, responsive person who knows where you’re at and what you need.
We’ve had students watch the same 15-minute video over and over, still not sure why they’re confused. One 5-minute conversation with a tutor clears it up. There’s a difference between information and actual understanding.
Myth #5: “Tutoring is a last resort.”
Reality: Waiting until you’re desperate is like going to the dentist only when you have a cavity. Students who start early tend to avoid stress, build stronger habits, and reach higher goals with far less pressure.
In fact, many of our students never fall behind because they’ve had consistent support from the very start of the semester.
So, what’s the takeaway?
Tutoring isn’t a punishment or a Plan B. It’s a smart, proactive step for students who want to build confidence, master tough material, and take control of their education.
Whether you’re aiming for top marks or just want school to feel less overwhelming—we’ve got your back.
